King City Grocery Outlet owners to open Newberg store
By Barbara Sherman
Tony and Tina Slyter had big news to announce during an event Jan. 12 at their
King City Grocery Outlet store celebrating the chain's first donation of apples to the Oregon Food Bank for the "Take a Bit Out of Hunger" campaign.
The Slyters will be opening their second store in Newberg in late February. "The way Grocery Outlet works is that they find locations for operators, and they found the Newberg store, which was a Wilco Farm Store and then a Dollar Store," Tony said.
"They posted it, and we posted a response. We had to put together a business plan and show how we would manage and staff both stores.
"We flew to Berkeley (where Grocery Outlet's headquarters is located) and met with the executive committee." Tony said their application was chosen because of the proximity of the two stores, their proven track record and how they interact with their customers.
"The King City store will continue to have the same attention it always has," Tony stressed.
"We love this store. Tina and I will split duties as far as having home stores, but our presence will continue like it has been. The service level will remain the same." Some employees will transfer to Newberg because they live there, according to Tony. But there still will be familiar faces among the employees in the King City store. "We're just excited for this opportunity," he said. "Our son graduated from George Fox College, so we have already been involved in the Newberg community."
